Book Fair, Presidents' Day,Curriculum Update
From the desk of Mrs. Barrett:
Our Nickajack Elementary Book Fair kicks off tomorrow, 2/20 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.!
Thanks to all for the lovely Valentine cards and candy. A special thanks also goes to Mrs. Mot, Mrs. Burt, Mr. West and Mrs. Cornelius for your help at our Special Learning Centers last Friday.
The children are continuing to grow and learn. We are practicing more handwriting on lines, both in class and for homework. In phonics we are working on short vowels and long vowels in the middle of words. In Math we are working on comparing numbers more than less than and equal to. We continue to work on our problem solving skills in Math and Social Studies. Finally, we are reading and learning about "President's Day" and Presidents Obama, Lincoln, and Washington.
Stop by and see our cute "Flip Your Wig" pictures we did to compare Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.

100 Days of School
Happy New Year, everyone! Here is the lastest news from Mrs. Barrett. Remember to attend your conference this week.
Tuesday is the 100th day of school. For Tuesday, 1/26/10, please allow your child to bring a collection of 100 items to school. Examples are 100 Cheerios, 100 Fruit Loops, 100 cotton balls, 100 stickers, etc. The items are non returnable (the children will be sharing, graphing and counting objects to 100). If you have any questions, please let Mrs. Barrett know. 100 day items need to be sent in a plastic baggie.
In Math, we are learning about number sense and measurement. In Language Arts, we are working with vowels in the middle of words. In Science we are measuring data (it's tied in with the math standard of measurement.) and in Social Studies we are learning about Dr. Martin Luther King.
Next month is Black History Month and President's Day. For the week of February 1st, please find and either cut out or print a picture of President Obama and send to class. Kindergarten is doing a picture wall of the current era of Black History and we will be doing classroom studies about President Obama for Black History Month.
