Animal Friends and Community

Math Day supplies and participation needed

Dear Families,

Make way for "Hands On Problem Solving" at Mrs. Barrett's Math Day!

We need to get ready, and we need your help. This is what it will take:

1. One or two volunteers 3/24/10
2. Kidney beans (2 packs)
3. One pack blue construction paper.
4. Sunflower seeds
5. 1 8x10 pack of red construction paper pre-cut into 20 ovals to be ladybugs
6. 2 boxes gallon ziploc bags
7. 2 large bags of jelly beans
8. 1 jumbo box of goldfish
9. large size sticky post-it notes

Please email me motcyn@gmail.com or call 770-745-0336 by Friday morning with three things your family would like to donate . I'll compare the lists and let you know what to send.

March news

Zoo field trip March 30.

Two official chaperones are needed at the cost of $16 each. If you would like to be an official chaperone, let Mrs. Barrett know. The two will be drawn from a hat. Other parents are welcome to meet the class at the zoo, pay and enjoy the day. Official chaperones may not bring other children.

Six student still need permission slips.

Parent summit tonight beginning at 6:00 p.m. Child care is provided for school age children. We have five great topics for our parents to choose from including: "The Challenges of Raising a Boy"; "Special Education Nuts and Bolts" ;" Preparing for the CRCT"; "The Challenges of Raising a Girl" and "Preparing for Middle School". The Parent Summit promises to be a very informative
event!

Book Fair, Presidents' Day,Curriculum Update

From the desk of Mrs. Barrett:

Our Nickajack Elementary Book Fair kicks off tomorrow, 2/20 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.!

Thanks to all for the lovely Valentine cards and candy. A special thanks also goes to Mrs. Mot, Mrs. Burt, Mr. West and Mrs. Cornelius for your help at our Special Learning Centers last Friday.

The children are continuing to grow and learn. We are practicing more handwriting on lines, both in class and for homework. In phonics we are working on short vowels and long vowels in the middle of words. In Math we are working on comparing numbers more than less than and equal to. We continue to work on our problem solving skills in Math and Social Studies. Finally, we are reading and learning about "President's Day" and Presidents Obama, Lincoln, and Washington.

100 Days of School

Happy New Year, everyone! Here is the lastest news from Mrs. Barrett. Remember to attend your conference this week.

Tuesday is the 100th day of school. For Tuesday, 1/26/10, please allow your child to bring a collection of 100 items to school. Examples are 100 Cheerios, 100 Fruit Loops, 100 cotton balls, 100 stickers, etc. The items are non returnable (the children will be sharing, graphing and counting objects to 100). If you have any questions, please let Mrs. Barrett know. 100 day items need to be sent in a plastic baggie.

In Math, we are learning about number sense and measurement. In Language Arts, we are working with vowels in the middle of words. In Science we are measuring data (it's tied in with the math standard of measurement.) and in Social Studies we are learning about Dr. Martin Luther King.

Next month is Black History Month and President's Day. For the week of February 1st, please find and either cut out or print a picture of President Obama and send to class. Kindergarten is doing a picture wall of the current era of Black History and we will be doing classroom studies about President Obama for Black History Month.

Reminders; News from Mrs. Barrett

Our letter-sound of the week is /Aa/. Please sign up for the Angel Tree if you'd like to donate! Show and tell for items beginning with the letter-sound /Aa/ need to be sent in on 12/11 and they will be returned to you the same day.

Please continue working on fair trade money problems at home. For example, Charlie has 5 pennies. Does he need 1 nickel or 1 dime to buy crayons that cost 10 cents?. Does Charlie have enough money? Why or Why not? If you have any questions concerning the math homework, please let Mrs. Barrett know.

Upcoming "Winter Holiday" events are as follows:
12/11/09 "Polar Express" Read Aloud and "Literature Response" with our Book Buddies. Children may wear pajamas to school. No slippers please.

12/17/09 "Winter Holiday Party" in Mrs. Barrett and Mrs. Huddleston's class from 12:45-1:45. If you can help, please complete the handout that was sent home in your child's book bag on last Friday.

Parents are welcome to attend the "Winter Holiday Party." Also, please let Mrs. Barrett know if you would like to help take the holiday tree" down at the end of the party and before dismissal on 12/17/09. Thanks.

12/21/09- through 1/4/09 NO SCHOOL DUE TO WINTER HOLIDAYS! Students return to school on 1/5/10. Teachers return to school for "Teacher Work day" on 1/4/10.
